American goulash, sometimes calledslumgullion orMinnesota goulash[1][2], is an Americancomfort food dish, similar toAmerican chop suey. American goulash is usually referred to in the midwestern and southern United States as simply "goulash". It is a descendant or variant ofHungariangoulash.[3]

American goulash, mentioned in cookbooks since at least 1914, exists in a number of variant recipes.[3][4] Originally a dish of seasonedbeef,[4] core ingredients now include various kinds ofpasta (usuallymacaroni or egg noodles),ground beef cooked with aromatics such asonions andgarlic, and some form oftomatoes, whethercanned tomatoes (whole, diced, or crushed are all common variants),tomato sauce, ortomato paste.[5] Additionally, some variations of American goulash includecheese.[6]
