American Primitive is a play byWilliam Gibson about the lives ofJohn andAbigail Adams. Gibson used the correspondence of John and Abigail Adams to create a verse drama about the period of theAmerican Revolution.
American Primitive debuted, unsuccessfully, at theBerkshire Theatre Festival in 1969. The production, directed byFrank Langella, starredAnne Bancroft as Abigail Adams.[1]
