American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) is an American Muslimthink tank formed in 2003 byZuhdi Jasser inPhoenix, Arizona.

AIFD advocates for theseparation of religion and state and confronts the ideologies ofpolitical Islam and openly counters the belief that the Muslim faith is inextricably rooted to the concept of theIslamic state.[1][2]

Mission

[edit]

AIFD's mission statement as found on theirwebsite states, "is to advocate for the preservation of the founding principles of theUnited States Constitution, liberty and freedom, through the separation of mosque and state."[3]

Founder

[edit]

AIFD was founded byZuhdi Jasser in March 2003. A former Lieutenant Commander in theUnited States Navy, Jasser served 11 years as a medical officer. His tours of duty included Medical Department Head aboard theUSS El Paso which deployed toSomalia duringOperation Restore Hope; Chief Resident atBethesda Naval Hospital; and Staff Internist for the Office of the Attending Physician to theUnited States Congress. He is a recipient of theMeritorious Service Medal.

Timothy R. Furnish said that Jasser's quest is to resurrect the doctrine of theMu'tazilah, a group in earlyIslamic history which stated that reason was as important as revelation, and that theQur'an was created rather than eternally existent and that humans hadfree will.[4]
