InGreek mythology,Amatheia (Ancient Greek:Ἀμάθεια means 'rears, nurses' or 'she is sparkling water')[1] was the "fair-tressed"Nereid[2] and was described to have "azure locks luxuriant" or as some translations put it "long, heavy hair".[1] As one of these 50 sea-nymphs, she was the daughter of the "Old Man of the Sea"Nereus and theOceanidDoris.[1] Variations of her names wereÆmathia,[3]Amathea[4] andAmathia[5] which means "queen of voice".[1]

Amatheia and her other sisters appeared toThetis when she cries out in sympathy for the grief ofAchilles for his slain friendPatroclus.[6]
