Aman Sehrawat (born 16 July 2003) is an Indianfreestyle wrestler.[2] He is the youngest Indian to win an individual Olympic medal, having secured a bronze medal at the2024 Paris Olympics.[3][4]

Early life

Sehrawat was born on 16 July 2003 in thevillage ofBirohar,Haryana, where he initially took part inmud wrestling. Inspired bySushil Kumar's silver medal win in the2012 Summer Olympics, he enrolled at theChhatrasal Stadium inNorth Delhi at the age of 10.[5][6] He lost both of his parents at the age of 11. Following their deaths, Sehrawat and his younger sister, Puja, were taken in by their uncles. His uncle Sudhir revealed in an interview withHindustan Times that Sehrawat struggled with depression and anxiety after his mother's death.[7] At the Chhatrasal Stadium, he was trained by Lalit Kumar.[8]

Career

In 2022, following his gold medal at the Under-23 Asian Championships, Sehrawat became the first-ever Indian to win a gold medal at theUnder-23 World Championships.[9]

Sehrawat won his first National Championship title in 2021. He used to train under coach Lalit Kumar.[5]

In April 2023, he won the gold medal at the2023 Asian Wrestling Championships in Astana.[10][11] He then won a bronze medal inthe 57 kg category at the2022 Asian Games.[6][12]

In January 2024, he won the gold medal in the men's 57kg event at theZagreb Open wrestling tournament, defeating all his opponents bytechnical superiority.[13]

Sehrawat competed at the2024 World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Istanbul and earned India a quota place for the2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.[14] TheWFI picked him over Tokyo Olympics silver medallistRavi Kumar Dahiya for the 2024 Olympics.[15] He was the only Indian male wrestler to qualify for the2024 Summer Olympics.[16]

In themen's 57 kg event at the 2024 Olympics, he defeatedVladimir Egorov andZelimkhan Abakarov via technical superiority, before losing to the top-seedRei Higuchi in the semifinal.[17] He won the bronze medal by defeatingDarian Cruz 13–5, becoming the youngest Indian to win an individual Olympic medal at 21 years and 24 days.[18][19]
