Amaal Mallik is an Indian music director, composer, singer, music producer, arranger, background scorer, performer and lyricist.[1] He is the elder son ofDaboo Malik and Jyothi Malik, and grandson ofSardar Malik.[2] He debuted as a composer in 2014 by composing three songs forSalman Khan'sJai Ho, following it up with the song "Naina" fromKhoobsurat.[3] He got widely recognition by composing songs forM.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story.[4] He is signed on bySony Music India.
Amaal Mallik is the elder of two children born to music directorDaboo Malik and Jyothi Malik.[5] He was born on 16 June 1990 inMumbai. He studied inJamnabai Narsee School and completed his graduation in Bachelor of Commerce fromN. M. College in Mumbai. His younger brotherArmaan Malik is also a well-known musician.[6]
He started learning music at the age of 8 and took a liking towards thepiano. He studied piano and completed his course atTrinity College of Music (Western Classical, Jazz & Rock) under the guidance and training he received from teachers including Benny, Xavier Fernandes, Tony Pinto and Joy Bose.[7] He also trained in Indian classical music informally under the tutelage of his grandfatherSardar Malik.[8]
Mallik began his career journey at a young age. After completing his 10th grade, he immediately went on to assist music composer and background scorerAmar Mohile for the soundtrack ofSarkar (2005) andShootout at Lokhandwala (2007) at the age of 15, later moving on to producing and arranging music for his father in films like Sohail Khan'sKisaan (2009), for which he collaborated on a remix track of "Mere Desh Ki Dharti" with pop singer,Daler Mehndi.[9]
From 2008 to 2011 Malik produced background scores forSandeep Chowta andSalim–Sulaiman for films likeRowdy Rathore,R... Rajkumar,Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns,Heroine,Youngistaan,Ab Tak Chhappan 2, andPhata Poster Nikla Hero. His first outing as a solo background scorer was forSaina, a biopic on the life of ace badminton player Saina Nehwal.[10]
In 2014, he debuted as a music composer. He composed three songs forSalman Khan's filmJai Ho and a song forKhoobsurat.[11]
In 2017, he composed two songs forBadrinath Ki Dulhania, of which he sang "Aashiq Surrender Hua" withShreya Ghoshal; another, "Roke Na Ruke Naina" was sung byArijit Singh. Singh wonFilmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and Mallik earned a nomination ofFilmfare Award for Best Music Director along withTanishk Bagchi anAkhil Sachdeva. Mallik composed all the songs forNoor, and sang a song withTulsi Kumar. He composed two songs forChef, two songs forGolmaal Again,[12] and two songs forMubarakan; he also sang in the latter.[13] He composed two singles in the same, both sung by his younger brotherArmaan Malik.[14]
In 2018, Mallik composed two singles, "Ghar Se Nikalte Hi" and "Ready to Move". Armaan sang in both songs.[15] Mallik also composed a song forSonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety which earned himIIFA best music director of 2019.
In 2019, Mallik composed two songs, "Kyun Rabba" (sung byArmaan Malik) and "Tum Na Aaye" (sung byK.K.) for theSujoy Ghosh thrillerBadla, which marked him as the youngest composer to compose forAmitabh Bachchan.[16] Mallik was featured as judge in the Indian reality singing show,Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs. He next composed "Chale Aana", sung by Armaan, for the Luv Ranjan backedDe De Pyaar De.[17] He also composed a song for the second highest-grossing film that year,Kabir Singh, which was titled "Yeh Aaina" and sung byShreya Ghoshal. On 8 July 2020 another single was released under the name of "Zara Thehro", sung by his brotherArmaan Malik andTulsi Kumar under the labelT-Series.[18]
In August 2020 he come back with new song 'Dil Ko Maine Di Kasam" music is composed by himself, sung byArijit Singh, lyrics are penned byKumaar.[19]
Amaal Mallik announced his debut single titled "Tu Mera Nahi", sung and performed by him in collaboration withSony Music India.[20]
He announced his upcoming song fromSaina (film). In this film Mallik composed 3 songs titled, "Chal Wahin Chale" sung byShreya Ghoshal, "Main Hoon Na Tere Saath" sung byArmaan Malik and "Parinda" sung by himself.[21]
In September 2021, Mallik, along withSukriti Kakar andPrakriti Kakar, collaborated withDua Lipa for Indian remix version ofLevitating.[22]
In 2020,Eastern Eye also listed him inDynamic dozen for the decade in its 11th position.[23]
