Alzatea verticillata is a smallfloweringtree, native to theNeotropics. It inhabits moist submontane forests fromCosta Rica andPanama inCentral America south toPeru andBolivia in tropicalSouth America. It is the sole species of genusAlzatea andfamilyAlzateaceae.
Alzatea verticillata has opposite, obovate or elliptical leaves. Its flowers areactinomorphic and bisexual, and lack a corolla. The flowers andfruit are similar to theMyrtaceae but the ovary is superior. The fruit is a loculicidal capsule.[3]
