TheComunidade Intermunicipal do Alto Minho (Portuguese pronunciation:[ˈaltuˈmiɲu]) is an administrative division innorthern Portugal. It is situated between theMinho River andLima River. It was created in October 2008.[1] Since January 2015, Alto Minho is also the designation of aNUTS3 subregion ofNorte Region, that covers the same area as the intermunicipal community.[2] The main town of the intermunicipal community isViana do Castelo. The intermunicipal community iscoterminous with theViana do Castelo District. The population in 2011 was 244,836,[3] in an area of 2,218.84 km2.[4]
It borders to the north theGalicia autonomous region inSpain and to the south with theCávado intermunicipal community. It is an area with a stronggastronomic identity and produces a specific type ofwine calledVinho Verde (young wine).
It is composed of ten municipalities:[5]
