Almon Heath Read (June 12, 1790 – June 3, 1844) was an American politician who served as aDemocratic member of theU.S. House of Representatives forPennsylvania's 17th congressional district from 1842 to 1843 andPennsylvania's 12th congressional district from 1843 to 1844. He served in both houses of the Pennsylvania legislature and asPennsylvania State Treasurer.
Read was born inShelburne, Vermont. He graduated fromWilliams College inWilliamstown, Massachusetts in 1811. He served as county clerk from 1815 to 1820. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1816 and commenced practice inMontrose, Pennsylvania.
He was a member of thePennsylvania House of Representatives from 1827 to 1832. He served in thePennsylvania State Senate for the11th district from 1833 to 1837 and asPennsylvania State Treasurer from 1840 to 1841.[1]
Read was elected as a Democrat to theTwenty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death ofDavis Dimock, Jr. He was reelected to theTwenty-eighth Congress and served until his death in Montrose in 1844. Interment in Montrose Cemetery.
