Marissa Irvine arrives at a neighborhood home to pick up her son Milo from a playdate with classmate Jacob Kaminski. However, Esther tells her that she is not a nanny and that there are no children at her house. The number used to arrange the playdate has been disconnected, and they discover that Jacob is in the care of another parent, Sarah Larsen, while Milo is nowhere to be found. When Marissa finds and calls Jacob's mom's real number, a confused Jenny tells her that she never sent a text message. Marissa rushes home, frantic, and meets her husband Peter coming from work, who confirms that Milo is missing. A formal search begins to find Milo. As the Irvines are wealthy, it is assumed that Milo was taken for ransom. Peter's younger siblings Lia and Brian, Marissa's business partner and best friend Colin, and Jenny Kaminski each arrive to comfort the family.

Milo's nanny, Ana Garcia, is suspected as she had just left town that same day, but she is cleared when she returns for her missing phone and the school informs police that Carrie Finch had picked up Milo that day. Carrie is revealed to have been the Kaminskis' nanny. Detectives Alcaras and Monge release Carrie's photo to the press to be circulated. The Irvines hold a press conference that spirals out of control when reporters accuse the couple of staging the kidnapping, and Jenny comforts Marissa in the aftermath. Though Ana claims to not have spoken with Carrie, Jenny and Marissa discover matching credit card charges on the nannies' accounts. Ana admits that the two hung out several times after school with Milo and Jacob, and they also met up at the Chicago Marathon a few weeks prior, where Carrie had a suspicious argument with an unknown man. Combing through social media photos, Alcaras finds and circulates a picture of the man's face, and Esther comes forward to identify him as Kyle Smit, her former foster son. Kyle was recently released from prison, and his only visit was from Carrie, one week before his release.

The circulated photo is also flagged by a gas station clerk, and after conducting a search of nearby lakeside vacation rentals they find an empty house with children's items and blood on a cabinet. Kyle’s body is found in the lake, with the cause of death being a gunshot to the back of the head. Meanwhile, Peter receives a ransom call from an unidentified man. The man tells Peter to get cash together, and that if Peter tells anyone about the call he will kill Milo. Colin arranges a door-to-door canvassing of the area to no avail. Subplots see Jenny juggling a book deal with a demanding author and taking care of her son with her apathetic husband, before asking for a divorce when she catches him lying to cover up slacking on parental duties; and Detective Alcaras grappling with the choice to cover up a rich kid's crime in exchange for getting his disabled son into a private school.

A toy that was lost over Easter weekend and found at the lakeside rental raises suspicion between the Irvine siblings, Marissa, and Colin, who were the only ones at the vacation home that day. On the evening of a television interview arranged by Marissa, the group implodes into arguing. Brian discovers that Peter had looked into a spinal surgery and lied to him about not being a good match. Peter confesses that he was the one who tripped Brian when they were kids, causing him to fall and become disabled, and allowed Lia to take the blame. Alcaras calls Marissa: a boy has been found in a car trunk in a motel parking lot. Searching nearby rooms, they discover the body of Rob Murphy, a bookie that Colin had worked with. Alcaras and Monge speak to his ex-wife Irene, who works at the same construction site Kyle did, and learn that Rob is Carrie’s father, and that Carrie’s real name is Josephine.

Five years prior, Josie and Kyle are in a happy relationship, though struggling financially, and expecting their first child. Kyle is arrested for drug dealing. When their son dies, she falls into a downward spiral, especially as she is forced to live with the verbally and emotionally abusive Irene. In the years following, Josie reconnects with her bookie father, Rob, and begins accompanying him on visits to collect money from delinquent clients, one of whom is Colin. On Easter weekend, Rob and Josie had gone to visit him at the vacation rental, where Josie serendipitously meets Milo and discovers unique similarities in their personalities.

Following Milo's return, Josie shows up at the Irvines’ house with a gun. She intrudes while Marissa, Peter, Lia, Brian, and Colin, are in the middle of a heated argument over Colin's gambling-related financial troubles, which have been discovered by Marissa and their firm. Colin also reveals that he is dating Lia. Josie, visibly shaking and distressed, says that she is not there to harm anyone, though Colin dies in a struggle for the gun. Lia leaves to call an ambulance, and Josie allows Brian to go upstairs to comfort Milo, now awake and calling for his mother.

Josie explains that she isn’t there to take Milo, only to warn Marissa that she needs to protect Milo from Peter. While reaching for a phone with a recording as proof, she is overpowered by Peter, who shoots her. A horrified and confused Marissa confronts Peter about her allegations, recognizing the name Josephine Murphy as the woman they had gotten into a car accident with six years prior.

It is revealed Josie and her newborn had gotten into a head-on collision with Peter and Marissa, who were also driving with their newborn son. Josie and Marissa were both knocked unconscious, and the real Milo had died. Peter, believing Josie to have died, and anticipating Marissa’s suffering if she were to survive, switches the two babies. Josie recalled hearing her son crying in the backseat, indicating that he hadn’t been killed in the crash. Combined with the strong and sudden emotional connection she felt when she met Milo years later, she deduced that Peter had stolen her son while she was unconscious. Over time she devised a plan to steal Milo back, and Kyle agreed to help after seeing Milo at the marathon and realized he looked very similar to his own father. After the kidnapping, Josie had asked for help from Rob, who made the ransom call to Peter. Unbeknownst to Josie, Rob shot Kyle and contacted Peter to come to the motel to pay the ransom while Josie was out. Peter had killed Rob, not knowing that his phone was recording the whole ordeal, and put a blindfolded Milo in the trunk of a car to be discovered by the police.

The police arrive, and Peter claims he shot Josie in self defense. Listening to the recording, Marissa realizes Peter switched the babies on the night of the car accident, and is the one who murdered Rob. Peter convinces her to hand over the phone for Milo's sake. She confides in Jenny that she feels trapped between telling the truth and possibly losing Milo, and the danger that Peter poses to them both. At Colin’s funeral, she uncharacteristically makes out with Peter. Peter develops a severe allergic reaction from soy, but his Epipen is expired and the emergency kit is missing from the car. He realizes that Marissa had been in charge of his medications but dies before the ambulance arrives.

Detective Alcaras visits Marissa at her new home. He explains how he figured out that Milo was in fact Josie's son, but despite it being against the law, he’s closed the case and has no moral qualms with the outcome.^[1][2][3]

Megan Gallagher is writer, creator and executive producer on the series, which is an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name by Andrea Mara who is associate producer.Sarah Snook stars and is also an executive producer.Universal International Studios is producing the series.^[5]Minkie Spiro is set to direct several episodes and executive produce.^[6][7][8] Other executive producers are Nigel Marchant,Gareth Neame and Joanna Strevens for Carnival Films, Jennifer Gabler Rawlings and Christine A. Sacani. The series producer is Terry Gould.^[9] Kate Dennis has directed multiple episodes as well.^[10]

On July 24, 2024,Jake Lacy,Sophia Lillis, andMichael Peña joined the main cast.^[11] In August 2024,Dakota Fanning,Abby Elliott,Jay Ellis andThomas Cocquerel were cast as series regulars.^[12][13]

Principal photography took place inMelbourne in August 2024.^[14][15]
