Alistair James Magowan[N 1][1][2] (born 10 February 1955)[3] is a British retiredAnglican bishop. He served as theBishop of Ludlow — the solesuffragan bishop of theChurch of EnglandDiocese of Hereford — from 2009[4][5] until his 2020 retirement.

Early life and education

Magowan attendedLeeds University, gaining hisBachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Animal Physiology and Nutrition[3] in 1977, andTrinity College, Bristol, to train for the ministry from 1978[6] and being awarded aDiploma of Higher Education (DipHE).

Ordained ministry

Magowan was made a deacon atPetertide 1981 (28 June)[7] and ordained a priest the Petertide following (27 June 1982) — both times byDavid Lunn,Bishop of Sheffield.[8] His first ministerial role (title post) was asassistant curate ofSt John the BaptistOwlerton,Sheffield (1981–1984), followed by a second curacy, atSt Nicholas',Durham (1984–1989). He remained in Durham as chaplain toSt Aidan's College (1984–1989), then moved toSurrey, where he served asvicar ofSt John's,Egham (1989–2000);[3] while at Egham he was alsoRural Dean ofRunnymede (1993–1998)[6] and chair of the GuildfordDiocesan Board of Education (1995–2000).[3]

In 2000, he moved to becomeArchdeacon of Dorset until 2009;[9] in that role he was also acanon andprebendary ofSalisbury Cathedral[6] and chair of the Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education (from 2003).

Episcopal ministry

In 2009, he was appointed to becomeBishop of Ludlow, the solesuffragan bishop of theDiocese of Hereford. He was ordained and consecrated as a bishop on 29 September 2009 atSt Paul's Cathedral[10] byRowan Williams,Archbishop of Canterbury.[11] As Bishop of Ludlow, heex officio held the post ofArchdeacon of Ludlow[3] (he was collated on 2 October 2009)[11] and has been a prebendary ofHereford Cathedral since 2010.[6] He retired effective 30 April 2020.[12]

Retirement

In retirement, Magowan has served as part-time ActingArchdeacon of Stoke in theDiocese of Lichfield, 1 November 2020[13]–2021 and as anhonorary assistant bishop of the diocese since 2021.[14]

Personal life

He married in 1979;[3] he and his wife have three children.[15]
