Alison Comyn (born 28 October 1969) is an IrishFianna Fáil politician who has served as asenator since February 2025 after beingnominated by the Taoiseach.[1] She is a formerIrish televisionjournalist and broadcaster.

She has presentedSky World News onSky News, and occasionally presentedSunrise withStephen Dixon, She was formerly the news anchor ofUTV Ireland's weekday news and current affairs programmesIreland Live news andIreland Live news at 10 which aired between January 2015 and January 2017.[2] It won theIFTA for Best News programme for itsBrexit coverage in 2016. She has also worked for theDrogheda Independent from 2006 to 2014, and from 2018 to 2024. She was an unsuccessfulFianna Fáil candidate for Louth at the2024 general election.

Journalism career

Comyn previously worked on programmes withRTÉ,BBC, Sky News andChannel 4.[3] Prior to working at UTV Ireland, she was a reporter with Independent Newspapers, covering regional, political, crime and current affairs issues, including her column "Comyn Sense". She was also a reporter and news anchor with Newsline onBBC NI and Sky News Ireland.[citation needed]

She also presentedBBC One's nationalHoliday programme from 1997 to 2000, where she worked alongsideJill Dando,Carol Smillie andCraig Doyle.

In April 2017, she presented RTE'sLiveline programme onRTÉ Radio 1 for two weeks.[citation needed]

Political career

On 26 August 2024, Comyn was added as aFianna Fáil candidate for theLouth constituency for the2024 general election alongside senatorErin McGreehan, but Comyn was not elected.[4] Comyn was appointed toSeanad Éireann on 7 February 2025 byTaoiseachMicheál Martin.[5][6]

Personal life

Comyn was married to Malachy Murphy from 2001 to 2018, and they have two children.[7]
