Aliartos (Greek:Αλίαρτος) is a small town and former municipality in theBoeotia regional unit, Greece, at 109 kilometres fromAthens and about 18 kilometres west ofThebes. Since 2011, it is part of the municipalityAliartos-Thespies.[2] The 2021 census recorded 5,388 residents in the municipal unit of Aliartos and 4,385 in the town of Aliartos.[1] Its name comes from the ancient city ofHaliartus.
The modern town of Aliartos is a recent creation. In the early 19th century, the site was occupied by two small agricultural settlements,Moulki (Μούλκι) andKrimpas (Κριμπάς). In 1835, the name of ancient Haliartus was revived for the newly established municipality which encompassed these settlements. Krimpas was renamed to Aliartos in June 1919,[3] but in 1951 the settlement was disbanded and the name was transferred in July 1953 to Moulki.[4] The names of Moulki and Krimpas survive as quarters of the new town.
Aliartos lies in the center of theKopais (Kωπαΐδα) plain. The municipality of Aliartos covers an area of 256.507 km2 (99.038 sq mi), the municipal unit of Aliartos is 148.355 km2 (57.280 sq mi) and the community is 66.077 km2 (25.512 sq mi).[5]
Under theKöppen climate classification, Aliartos has ahot-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa), with wet, cool winters and dry, hot summers.
