Alfred Rahlfs' edition of the Septuagint, sometimes calledRahlfs' Septuagint orRahlfs' Septuaginta, is acritical edition of theSeptuagint published for the first time in 1935 by the GermanphilologistAlfred Rahlfs.[1] This edition is the most widely spread edition of the Septuagint.[2]
The full title of this edition is:Septuaginta: id est Vetus Testamentum Graece iuxta LXX interpretes; this edition was first published in 1935, in 2 volumes, by theDeutsche Bibelgesellschaft, inStuttgart.[3][4] Many reprints were made later.[3]
The name of the 2006 revision is known as theRahlfs-Hanhart, after the revisorRobert Hanhart.
In his edition, Rahlfs used mainly threecodices to establish the text:Vaticanus,Sinaiticus andAlexandrinus, with the Vaticanus as the "leading manuscript".[5]
In 2006,Robert Hanhart edited a revised version of the text, known as the "Editio altera",[1] or "Rahlfs-Hanhart".[6][7][8]
The text of this revised edition contains changes in thediacritics. The revised version has only wording changes in two instances: in Isaiah 5:17 and 53:2 (Is 5:17ἀπειλημμένων "of the received" becameἀπηλειμμένων "of the expunged", and Is 53:2ἀνηγγείλαμεν "I reported" became by conjectureἀνέτειλε μένὰ "he rose before").[2]
