Etymology

[edit]

The nameAlexander originates from theAncient Greek:Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros; 'defending men'[2] or 'protector of men'). It is a compound of the verbἀλέξειν (aléxein; 'to ward off, avert, defend')[3] and the nounἀνήρ (anḗr,genitive:ἀνδρός,andrós; meaning 'man').[4]

The earliestattested form of the name, is theMycenaean Greek feminineanthroponym𐀀𐀩𐀏𐀭𐀅𐀨,a-re-ka-sa-da-ra, (/Alexandra/), written in theLinear B syllabic script.[5]Alaksandu, alternatively calledAlakasandu orAlaksandus, was a king ofWilusa who sealed a treaty with theHittite kingMuwatalli II c. 1280 BC; this is generally assumed to have been a Greek called Alexandros.[citation needed]

The name was one of theepithets given to the Greek goddessHera and as such is usually taken to mean "one who comes to save warriors". In theIliad, the characterParis is also known as Alexander.[6] The name's popularity was spread throughout the Greek world by the military conquests ofAlexander the Great. Most later Alexanders in various countries were directly or indirectly named after him.[7][8]
