Aleksandar "Aco" Petrović (Serbian Cyrillic:Александар Петровић; 14 October 1959 – 1 December 2014) was a Serbianbasketball coach.
Petrović started his coaching career inRadnički Belgrade, where he spent four years. After that, he was assistant coach of theCrvena zvezda and won the1997–98 Yugoslavia championship.[1] He also led theFMP Železnik[2] andHemofarm Vršac from domestic clubs.
The first foreign engagement was inRussia in the teamLokomotiv Rostov, and with them he came to the final of2005 FIBA Europe Conference North. Also, Petrović has led more than foreign clubsUNICS,[3]Žalgiris[4][5] andAzovmash.[6]
Petrović was an assistant coach ofSvetislav Pešić in thenational team of Yugoslavia, with whom he won gold at the2001 European Championships inTurkey and, a year later, at theWorld Championships inIndianapolis. He also has a silver medal from the2009 European Championships inPoland when he was in the coaching staff ofDušan Ivković.
During his work at the clubUNICS it was detected the diseaseamyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Petović stopped coaching after that. Last UNICS game led by him was against his former clubCrvena zvezda in the2012–13 Eurocup. He died on 1 December 2014 at the age of 55.[7]
