Aleksandar Kovacevic (Serbian:Александар Ковачевић /Aleksandar Kovačević; born August 29, 1998) is an American professionaltennis player.[2] He has a career-highATP singles ranking of world No. 61 achieved on 24 November 2025 and a doubles ranking of No. 254 achieved on 3 April 2023.[3]
Born inNew York, Kovacevic is ofSerbian descent. His mother Milanka is fromTravnik inBosnia and Herzegovina, and his father Milan Kovačević is fromBelgrade,Serbia. Both his parents playedtable tennis and met during a tournament on the junior circuit. Before Aleksandar was born, they emigrated to the United States in 1998, where Milan studied computer science atUCLA and then worked atColumbia University in New York.[4] When Kovacevic was younger, the family visited Serbia every year.[5]
He cites the2005 US Open match betweenNovak Đoković andGaël Monfils, which he watched on Court 10 atFlushing Meadows, as the reason why he began playing tennis.[6]
Kovacevic made his Grand Slam qualifying debut at the2021 US Open, where he advanced to the final round before falling to ArgentineMarco Trungelliti.
Kovacevic made his Top 250 debut on July 25, 2022, as world No. 227 following a final showing at the2022 Indy Challenger.
Kovacevic made his ATP main draw debut at the2022 Korea Open, where he entered as a lucky loser. He recorded his first ATP tour level win by defeatingMiomir Kecmanović in the first round.[7] Next he defeatedTseng Chun-hsin to reach his first ATP quarterfinal andMackenzie McDonald to reach his first ATP semifinal.[8][9] As a result, he climbed 55 positions and reached No. 167 on October 3, 2022.[10]
He reached the top 125 on 6 February 2023, following his first Challenger title at the2023 Cleveland Open. At the2023 Delray Beach Open, he received a wildcard for his second ATP tour event, losing in the first round toMichael Mmoh.[11]
In March, he won his second Challenger title at the2023 Texas Tennis Classic in Waco, Texas as a wildcard.[12] He made his Masters 1000 debut at the2023 BNP Paribas Open as a wildcard. He reached the main draw at the2023 Miami Open as a lucky loser and recorded his first Masters win againstJaume Munar.[13][14]
He entered the2023 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships as a direct entry. He was accepted as a direct entry at the2023 French Open, making his Grand Slam debut where he playedNovak Djokovic.[15] He defeated qualifierOmni Kumar and then world No. 13Cameron Norrie in the second round of the2023 Los Cabos Open for the biggest win of his career,[16] to reach the quarterfinals, where he lost toDominik Koepfer.[17]
He qualified at the Masters 1000 at the2023 Rolex Shanghai Masters on his debut but lost toCristian Garín. He won his third Challenger title at the2023 Shenzhen Longhua Open, defeatingNuno Borges. He also reached the semifinals at the new2023 Shenzhen Luohu Challenger but lost after a walkover.
He qualified for the2024 Australian Open making his debut at this Major and recorded his first win in five sets overAlejandro Tabilo. As a result he moved into the top 85 in the rankings.[18]
He entered the2024 Delray Beach Open as a wildcard and the following week qualified for the2024 Los Cabos Open[19] where in the latter, he reached back-to-back quarterfinals at this tournament.[20][21] He also qualified for his first ATP 500 tournament, the2024 Abierto Mexicano Telcel and defeated Los Cabos champion, AustralianJordan Thompson.
He also received a wildcard for the2024 BNP Paribas Open.[22][23] At the next Masters, the2024 Miami Open, he reached the main draw after qualifying.
At the2024 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships, he recorded his first victory on clay in 3 hours and 16 minutes, the longest first round and tied for second-longest recorded match in the Houston tournament history, over another Australian,Thanasi Kokkinakis.[24][25][26] In the next round, he met sixth seed Jordan Thompson again, losing in three sets in the longest recorded match in the tournament history lasting 3 hours and 34 minutes, with two tiebreaks in the last two sets.[27][28]
At the ATP 500Citi DC Open in Washington, he reached the round of 16, defeating Atlanta championYoshihito Nishioka and 11th seedRoberto Carballés Baena and moved into the top 80 in the rankings on 5 August 2024 and to the top 75 two weeks later.[29]
In January, Kovacevic won theOeiras Indoors II Challenger, defeatingZsombor Piros in the final.[30][31] He qualified for the main-draw at theOpen Occitanie inMontpellier, France, and went on to defeat top seed and world No. 10Andrey Rublev in the last four to reach his firstATP Tour final,[32][33] where he lost to Canadian second seedFélix Auger-Aliassime in a deciding set tiebreak.[34][35]
In July, Kovacevic reached his secondATP Tour final at theLos Cabos Open, defeating again top seed and world No. 10 Andrey Rublev in the last four. He lost to another Canadian,Denis Shapovalov, in the final.[36] As a result, he reached a new career-high ranking of world No. 66 on 21 July 2025.[37]
