Alden Ream "Zeke" Sanborn (May 22, 1899 – December 1, 1991) was an Americanrower who competed in the1920 Summer Olympics inAntwerp.[1] He won a gold medal in men'seight. He also served as aUnited States Naval Aviator.[2]

Biography

Sanborn was born inJefferson, Wisconsin, on May 22, 1899, to Edwin J. Sanborn (1865–1941) and Augusta IreneReam Sanborn (1873–1933). After attendingBeloit College, he then entered theUnited States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1922 with special honors. At the 1920 Summer Olympics, he was part of the American boat from the academy, which won the gold medal in the eights. At the academy, he received aMarine Engineering degree. He then earned a Masters inAeronautical Engineering from theMassachusetts Institute of Technology.[3][4][5]

After receiving hisaviator wings at thePensacola naval air facility, he supported the development of torpedo planes and dive bombers for theUnited States Navy. He continued in support ofaircraft andaircraft carrier maintenance during and afterWorld War II, until 1951 when he retired from theUnited States Navy as acaptain. After retirement, Sanborn worked forChance Vought inDallas andCurtiss-Wright inNew Jersey until he retired again in 1963.[4]

On March 23, 1940, Sanborn married Marjorie Stewart (1911–1987).[6] Together they had two sons, Alden Ream Sanborn Jr. and Donald Stewart Sanborn.[4]

Sanborn died on December 1, 1991, inCharlotte Hall, Maryland[4] and was buried alongside his wife inArlington National Cemetery.[7]
