Albracca

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albracca (also spelledAlbraca andAlbrace) is a major city ofCathay in the Italian romanticepicsOrlando innamorato byMatteo Maria Boiardo[1] andOrlando furioso byLudovico Ariosto.[2] In the story it is the walled city and fortress whereAngelica and the knights she has befriended make their stand when attacked byAgrican, emperor ofTartary.[3]

Scholars have identified Albracca withBukhara in modernUzbekistan, in part because the siege of Albracca by Agrican described in theOrlando innamorato resembles the historic siege of Bukhara byGenghis Khan in 1220.[4]
