Holy See

TheHoly See has anapostolic nunciature inAlbania, which represents diplomatically theHoly See.[1]

The representative of the Holy See is officially called 'ApostolicNuncio to Albania' and has anambassador status. The office of the nunciature is located in the capital ofTirana.[1][2]

History

The history of the relations between the countries began in theMiddle Ages, whenSkanderbeg became the chief commander of the crusading forces ofPope Pius II. Later,Giovanni Francesco Albani becamepope from 1700 to 1721. He was born to an Albanian father descended from the nobleAlbani family from the region ofMalësi e Madhe inAlbania.

The apostolic nunciature in Albania started as an apostolic delegation to Albania byPope Benedict XV on 12 November 1920, and was elevated to thefull rank of a nunciature byPope John Paul II on 16 January 1991. The current apostolic nuncio to Albania isCharles John Brown, who was appointed byPope Francis on 9 March 2017.
