Alan John (born 7 May 1958 in Sydney) is an Australiancomposer. He studied music at theUniversity of Sydney, graduating in 1980. His compositions include original music for various plays, films (such asHolding the Man,[1]Three Dollars andThe Bank) and TV series (includingLove My Way), and the musicalsJonah Jones,Orlando Rourke andSnugglepot and Cuddlepie.
HisoperaThe Eighth Wonder was premiered in 1995 byOpera Australia. It was revived in 2000, during the Sydney Olympics Arts Festival, and again in 2016. In May 2008, his chamber operaThrough the Looking Glass, to a libretto byAndrew Upton, was premiered by theVictorian Opera at theMalthouse Theatre, Melbourne,[2] conducted byRichard Gill.[3][4] In May 2011, his operaHow to Kill your Husband (and other handy household hints), to alibretto byTimothy Daly and based onKathy Lette's 2007 book of the same name, premiered at the same venue under the same conductor.[5]
The annualScreen Music Awards are presented byAustralasian Performing Right Association (APRA) andAustralian Guild of Screen Composers (AGSC) for television and film scores and soundtracks.[6]
