Alan Dye is an Americandesigner who works atMeta and formerly worked as a design chief forApple. He created theLiquid Glass user interface for Apple devices and played roles in shaping other devices including theiPhone X,Apple Watch andVision Pro. In late 2025, he left Apple to become Chief Design Officer at Meta.

Early life

Dye was born inBuffalo, New York, United States.[1]

He was educated atSyracuse University and graduated in 1997.[2]

Career

Dye first worked atOgilvy and Mather's Brand Integration Group and then he worked for retailerKate Spade. He was also a freelance artist for book publishers and other publications.[3]

Dye joined Apple in 2006 and was involved with the design of packaging and the unboxing experience. Dye also contributed greatly to the design language ofiOS 7 in 2013. In 2015, Dye became the head of Apple's user interface design team. In 2022, he played an integral role in the creation of theDynamic Island, a feature oniPhones and then in 2025, he led the design ofLiquid Glass. He was also integral in the creation of theiPhone X,Vision Pro, andApple Watch.[4] He was succeeded byStephen Lemay at Apple.[4]

Dye resigned from Apple on December 5, 2025, to become chief of design for hardware, software andAI (artificial intelligence) integration of Meta interfaces.[5]
