Alan David Lourie (born January 13, 1935) is aUnited States circuit judge of theUnited States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Born inBoston,Massachusetts, Lourie received anBA degree fromHarvard College in 1956, aMaster of Science inOrganic Chemistry from theUniversity of Wisconsin in 1958, aDoctor of Philosophy inChemistry from theUniversity of Pennsylvania in 1965, and aJuris Doctor fromTemple University School of Law in 1970. He was a Chemist forMonsanto Corporation from 1957 to 1959, and then chemist andPatent Agent for Wyeth Labs inRadnor,Pennsylvania from 1959 to 1964. He wasin-house counsel, toSmithKline Beecham Corporation from 1964 to 1990.[1]
On January 24, 1990, Lourie was nominated by PresidentGeorge H. W. Bush to a seat on theUnited States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit vacated by JudgeDaniel Mortimer Friedman. Lourie was confirmed by theUnited States Senate on April 5, 1990, and received his commission on April 6, 1990.[1]
He has been described as having a "pro-patent outlook" in the bookInnovation and its Discontents byHarvard Business School professor Josh Lerner and byBrandeis University economics professorAdam B. Jaffe.[2]
