Al-Taybah al-Gharbiyah (Arabic:الطيبة الغربية, also spelledTeiba orTayibeh al-Gharbiyeh) is a town in centralSyria, administratively part of theHoms Governorate, northwest ofHoms. Nearby localities includeal-Shinyah to the southwest,al-Qabu to the south,Sharqliyya to the southeast,Taldou to the east,Kafr Laha andTell Dahab to the northeast,Qarmas andAqrab to the north,Qasraya to the northwest andKhunayzir to the west. According to theCentral Bureau of Statistics (CBS), al-Taybah al-Gharbiyah had a population of 4,086 in the 2004 census.[1] Its inhabitants today are predominantlySunni Muslims.[2][better source needed]
In 1829, duringOttoman rule, the village consisted of 33feddans and paid 3,190qirsh in annual tax revenues.[3] It was exempted from most of the taxation imposed on the other villages in the prosperous region southwest of Hama as the villaged belonged to thewaqf (endowment) of theKhalid ibn al-Walid Mosque inHoms.[4] In 1838 al-Taybah al-Gharbiyah's inhabitants were reported to beAlawites by English scholarEli Smith.[5]
