Al-Qaed Ibrahim Mosque (Arabic:مسجد القائد إبراهيم,romanizedMasjid ālqāed Ibrāhym,lit.'Commander Ibrahim Mosque') is amosque located in theRaml Station area ofAlexandria, on thenorth coast ofEgypt. The mosque is named in honour ofIbrahim Pasha, the formerWali of Egypt and the founder of the modernEgyptian military. During the2011 Egyptian revolution, it was an important gathering place for protesters.[2]

History

Its construction dates from 1948, and it was designed byMario Rossi, an Italian architect.[3] The mosque was erected on thecentenary of the death of Commander Ibrahim Pasha. In 2011, thesahn was used by protestors in their demonstrations against the government.[4] In 2017, there were protests at the mosque following the decision by the United States to move itsembassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.[5]

Architecture

The Al-Qaed Ibrahim Mosque has selected decorations from different eras. It has a graceful, highminaret, which is also distinguished from other minarets by the presence of aclock. The mosque blends the traditions ofNeo-Mamluk[6] and the influences of theOttoman architectural and landscape approaches.[4] The mosque is crowned with an egg-shaped dome on a small pavilion.[7] Next to the mosque is an event hall.
