Akutan Airport[2] (IATA:KQA[3],ICAO:PAUT[4],FAALID:7AK) is a state-owned public-useairport servingAkutan,[1] a city onAkutan Island in theAleutians East Borough of theU.S. state ofAlaska. The airport is located onAkun Island, 6 miles (10 km) east of Akutan Island. Scheduled air service is subsidized by theEssential Air Service program.
The airport was opened in 2012. Akutan was previously served byamphibious airplane service toAkutan Seaplane Base, located on Akutan Island. However, in 2012 operatorPenAir announced that they would retire theirGrumman Goose aircraft and as a result the traditional airport on Akun Island was built to serve Akutan. The airport on Akun was originally connected to Akutan by ahovercraft,[5][6] but the connection is now provided viahelicopter[7][8] operated byMaritime Helicopters.
Akutan Airport covers an area of 369acres (149ha) at anelevation of 133 feet (41 m) abovemean sea level. It has onerunway designated 9/27 with anasphalt surface measuring 4,500 by 75 feet (1,372 x 23 m).[1]
