Akram Hussein Chehayeb (Arabic:أكرم شهيب; born 17 October 1947) is aLebanese Druze politician who is a member ofthe Progressive Socialist Party headed byWalid Jumblatt. Cheheyab is a long-term member of the parliament and has also served in different cabinet and parliamentary posts.

Early life and education

Chehayeb was born inAley on 17 October 1947.[1] He received a bachelor's degree in biology fromthe Arab University of Beirut and a master's degree in history fromCairo University in 1982.[2]

Career

Chehayeb was a supporter ofthe Baath party andSaddam Hussein during his youth.[3] Then he became a member ofthe Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) in 1979.[3] He worked as a history professor atLebanese University inAley.[3] In 1984, he became office manager of Jumblatt.[3] From 1985 to 1991 he served as the director of the PSP inDamascus.[1] In 1992, he wonthe election, being a representative forBeirut. Inthe 1996 elections, Chehayeb won the Druze seat in Aley.[3] Chahayeb served as minister of environment from 1996 to 1998.[1][4] He also won the same seat inthe general elections of 2000.[5] From 2005 to 2009 he was the head of Lebanese environment committee.[1] In 2009, he was appointed minister of displaced to the cabinet headed by then prime ministerSaad Hariri, replacingRaymond Audi.[6] Chehayeb's tenure ended in 2011, and he was succeeded byAlaaeddine Terro as minister.[7]

Chehayeb also won Druze seat in Aley inthe 2009 general election,[8] and is part of the National Struggle Front bloc, which is under the control of Walid Jumblatt.[9]

In February 2013 Akram Chehayeb became part ofTammam Salam'sgovernment as minister of agriculture.[10] His term ended on 18 December 2016 when a newgovernment led bySaad Hariri was formed.

Personal life

Chehayeb is married to Salma Jurdi Chehayeb and has four children.[1]
