Akşam (Evening) is a Turkish newspaper founded in 1918, owned by Zeki Yeşildağ's Türk Medya Grup (T Medya Yatırım San. ve Tic. AŞ.) since 2013.[6][1][2] In 2013 it had a circulation of around 100,000.
Akşam's founders in 1918 includedNecmettin Sadak,Kazım Şinasi Dersan,Falih Rıfkı Atay andAli Naci Karacan.
Former editors includeDoğan Özgüden (1964–1966).[7]
In 2010, former editorSemra Pelek and editorial managerMustafa Dolu were charged in relation to reporting on theErgenekon trials.[8]
Akşam was owned by theÇukurova Media Group from 1997 to 2013, and previouslyMehmet Ali Ilıcak. It is currently owned by the Turkish government'sTMSF. Shortly after it was acquired by the TMSF, a number of journalists were fired, with the former AKP deputyMehmet Ocaktan replacing editor of five yearsİsmail Küçükkaya, and at least four journalists who had been critical of the government being fired.[9]
On 19 July 2013Akşam was sold (together with TV channelSky Turk 360 and radio stationAlem FM) to aCengiz-Kolin-Limak joint venture for TL60m.[10] In September 2013,Cengiz-Kolin-Limak withdrew from the attempt to buyAkşam.[11] In October 2013,Akşam, TV channelSky Turk 360, radio stationAlem FM and Alem Magazine were sold toEthem Sancak.[12]
In August 2017, Zeki Yeşildağ acquired the newspaper as part of Es Yayıncılık.[4][13]
