Ainars Bagatskis (born 29 March 1967) is a Latvian former professionalbasketball player andcoach, who currently works as the head coach ofŚląsk Wrocław of thePolish Basketball League (PLK).
During his club playing career, Bagatskis played at thesmall forward position.
Bagatskis was a member of the seniorLatvia national basketball team from 1992 to 2006. With Latvia, he played in fourEuroBasket tournaments.
Bagatskis began hiscoaching career in the 2005–06 season, while playing in his last season of professional basketball withBarons Rīga, where he stayed for one season. In 2006, he had a short stint as ahead coach in one of the greatest Lithuanian teams,Žalgiris Kaunas. Since 2007, he worked as a head coach in several teams, includingValmiera until 2009, the Russian teamYenisey Krasnoyarsk in the 2009–10 season,Sokhumi, and Kryvbasbasket until 2012.
In June 2012, he became the head coach of the Ukrainian teamBudivelnyk Kyiv.[1] He stayed with them for two seasons, winning theUkrainian Basketball SuperLeague two times with them, in 2013 and 2014. In the 2013–14 season, his team made its firstEuroLeague appearance in the club's history.
On 1 July 2014, he signed a one-year contract to become the head coach of the Russian teamNizhny Novgorod.[2] Nizhny Novgorod ended their season in theVTB United League, after being eliminated byCSKA Moscow, with 3–0 series sweep, in the League's semifinals series.
On 18 June 2016, he signed a two-year contract to become an assistant coach ofDavid Blatt's, with the Turkish clubDarüşşafaka.[3]
On December 24, 2016, Bagatskis became the head coach of the Israeli clubMaccabi Tel Aviv.[4]
On 16 May 2017, he parted ways withMaccabi Tel Aviv.[5]
On 30 June 2018, he signed withBrose Bamberg of theBasketball Bundesliga.[6]
On June 17, 2025, he signed withŚląsk Wrocław of thePolish Basketball League (PLK).[7]
Following the departure ofKęstutis Kemzūra, in February 2010, he became a team selector for the seniorLatvia national team.[8] So far, his team made twoEuroBasket appearances, at theEuroBasket 2011, in Lithuania, and at theEuroBasket 2013, in Slovenia.
