Whitney Cua Her (born 1992), better known by her stage nameAhney Her, is an American actress. She is ofHmong descent.
Born and raised inLansing, Michigan, Her completed high school atSexton High School before being cast forGran Torino.[1][2] She studied drama in a local talent school for three years.[3]
Her first film role was in the 2008 filmGran Torino,[2] directed byClint Eastwood. InGran Torino, Eastwood plays aKorean War veteran who helps aHmong American family in hisDetroit neighborhood.[2] She playsSue Lor, the intelligent, witty older sister ofThao Vang Lor, who was portrayed byBee Vang. She was 16 years old at the time of the film's opening in wide release on January 9, 2009.[2]
She was cast in the film after responding to an opencasting call sign-up at asoccer tournament.[2] The open call was specifically looking for potential Hmong actors. In a 2009 interview withThe Grand Rapids Press, she recalled, "I didn't believe it, 'cause the tent said, you know, 'Clint Eastwood movie' or something like that, 'Hmong people needed.' And I'm like, 'OK, yeah right. Like this would happen.' Out of all people, Hmong people? No."[2]
Ahney Her was inGrand Rapids, Michigan, to watch the first screening ofGran Torino.[2] The film made itsGrand Rapids debut at the Theater One at Celebration! Cinemas North on January 9, 2009.[2]
In 2011, she was cast in the action comedy movieNight Club as Nikki, alongsideZachary Abel,Natasha Lyonne,Ernest Borgnine, andMickey Rooney.
