AyatollahAhmad Khatami (Persian:احمد خاتمی, born 8 May 1960) is a senior and prominentIranianMuslim cleric,[3] member ofGuardian Council and a senior member of theAssembly of Experts.[4] In December 2005,Ali Khamenei appointed him asTehran’s substituteFriday prayer leader.[5] He is also aconservative andprinciplist politician.
He was born inSemnan,Imperial State of Iran.[6] He studied at seminaries inQom andSemnan.
In 2006, during thePope Benedict XVI Islam controversy, Khatami asked thePope to "fall on his knees in front of a seniorMuslimcleric and try to understandIslam."[7] In 2007, he addressed thedeath sentence issued byImam Khomeini againstSalman Rushdie, saying "In the Islamic Iran thatrevolutionaryfatwa ofImam [Khomeini] is still alive and cannot be changed."[8] In regard to the2009 Iranian election protests, Khatami denounceddemonstrators asrioters who wage war againstGod ("mohareb"), (acapital crime inIslamic law),[9] and accused reformist presidential candidatesMir Hossein Mousavi andMehdi Karroubi of Mohareb as "leaders of sedition" in 2011.[10]
He is not related toMohammad Khatami and his family members.
