Ancient Greek mythological figure from the Iliad
InGreek mythology ,Agapenor (Ancient Greek :Ἀγαπήνωρ ) was a leader of theArcadians in theTrojan War .[ 1]
Agapenor was a son ofAncaeus [ 2] and grandson ofLycurgus .
As king of theArcadians , Agapenor received sixty ships fromAgamemnon , in which he led his Arcadians toTroy .[ 3] He also occurs among thesuitors of Helen [ 4] and one of the men to be in theTrojan Horse .[ 5]
On Agapenor's return from Troy he was cast by a storm on the coast ofCyprus , where he founded the town ofPaphos and in it the famous temple ofAphrodite .[ 6]
Agapenor also occurs in the story ofAlcmaeon : it was to him that Arsinoe (orAlphesiboea ), Alcmaeon's wife was sold away by her own brothers.[ 7]
Agapenor had a descendantLaodice , who was known for having sent toTegea a robe (peplos) as a gift toAthena Alea ,[ 8] and to have built a temple ofAphrodite Paphia in Tegea.[ 9]
