Agano ware

Not to be confused withanchi ware, a type of pottery made inAgano, Niigata.

Agano ware (上野焼,Agano-yaki) is a type ofJapanese pottery traditionally made inFukuchi,Tagawa District, Fukuoka.[1]

History

Agano ware has its beginnings in 1602, when artisans arrived in Japan from theKingdom of Joseon inKorea by invitation from thedaimyo ofKokura Domain.[2] The beginnings of its production was supported byHosokawa Sansai,[3] who was otherwise known as thedaimyōHosokawa Tadaoki.[4][5] It was originally associated with thetea ceremony.[1]

Agano Kawara ware (上野香春焼) is a type of Agano ware traditionally made inKawara,Fukuoka Prefecture.[6]
