InGreek mythology,Aergia (/eɪˈɜːrdʒə/;Ancient Greek:Ἀεργία, 'inactivity')[1] is the personification ofsloth, idleness, indolence andlaziness. She is the translation of theLatin Socordia, or Ignavia: the name was translated into Greek becauseHyginus mentioned her being based on a Greek source, and thus she can be considered as both a Greek and Roman goddess.[citation needed] Aergia's opposite character isHorme, a goddess of effort.
Aergia was the daughter of theprimordial deitiesAether andGaia.[2]
According toStatius, Aergia was said to be the 'torpid' guard in the court ofHypnos (Sleep) in theUnderworld.[3]
