Aegyptosuchidae is anextinctfamily ofeusuchiancrocodyliforms from theCretaceous period of Africa. They are characterized by their large size and flat heads. The family includes two genera,Aegyptosuchus andAegisuchus.[1]
Aegyptosuchidae was originally established as themonotypic family name forAegyptosuchus peyeri in 1933. Upon the discovery of the fellow aegyptosuchidAegisuchus witmeri in 2012 by Holliday and Gardner, Aegyptosuchidae wasphylogenetically defined as the least inclusiveclade containingAegisuchus witmeri andAegyptosuchus peyeri, so long as it does not includeAlligator mississippiensis (American alligator),Bernissartia fagesii,Crocodylus niloticus (Nile crocodile),Gavialis gangeticus (gharial),Hylaeochampsa vectiana, orSusisuchus anatoceps.[1]
Aegyptosuchidae belongs to thecladeEusuchia, and is proposed to be thesister clade to thecrown groupCrocodylia, which contains allextant (living) crocodilians. Thephylogeny can be shown in thecladogram below:[1]
