Adirampattinam is a municipality in thePattukottai taluk of theThanjavur district in theIndianstate ofTamil Nadu. It is also known as Adirai in short by the residents. It is the largest coastal town in the district and fourth largest town in theThanjavur district.[citation needed]
Adirampattinam is an important coastal town connectingChennai andThoothukudi via theECR.
Adirampattinam is named , who was a localchieftain. Arab traders from Egypt and Yemen landed at the port ofKorkai (nowKayalpatnam[clarification needed]) in thePandia Kingdom in the year 1120 A.D. Some traders migrated here. Adirampattinam was initially called asSellinagar. Strong trading connections existed withYaalpanam, a city inSri Lanka. There is a strong cultural connection betweenKayalpatnam, Adirampattinam andKilakarai.[citation needed]
In 2021, the government upgraded Adirampattinam tomunicipality status.[citation needed]
Adirampattinam is located at10°12′N79°14′E / 10.20°N 79.24°E /10.20; 79.24[1] on the coast of theBay of Bengal. Being close to the equator, Adirampattinam enjoys atropical wet and dry climate. Extreme heat prevails in the months of April and May, while mid-May is the hottest (Agni) period during a year – with temperatures regularly reaching 100 °F or 37.8 °C. December and January are winter months, with temperatures dropping to 17 °C or 62.6 °F. The northeastmonsoon occurs in October and November. Adirampattinam normally receives rainfall of 1,200 millimetres or 47 inches per annum,[2] with over half from October to December.

As of the 2001 populationcensus of India, Adiramapttinam has a population of 48,066[5] Males constitute 47.95%(14897) of the population and females 52.04%(16169). Adirampattinam has an average literacy rate of 74.21%. Children under 6 years of age make up 13.08% of the population.Islam is the major religion with 72.25% of the population being Muslim and more than 40masjids within the town[citation needed].Tamil is the official language and is predominantly spoken. The most commonly used dialect is theCentral Tamil dialect.[citation needed] Adiramapttinam is also the fourth largest town by population in theThanjavur district.[citation needed]
This town is connected via road and rail with major towns and cities inTamil Nadu.
Adiramapattinam Railway Station is also one of the major railway stations inTiruchirapalli Zone.Karaikudi toTiruvarur passenger train is operating viaAdiramapattinam Railway Station.
The major port near by Adirai isThoothukudi. Adirampattinam is a coastal town connectingChennai andThoothukudi via the ECR. It is the gateway town for theChola Nadu region inTamil Nadu. It is situated at a distance of 59 km from the district capital,Thanjavur, and 356 km south of the state capital,Chennai. The ECR links roadSH-66 fromKumbakonam, which meets the ECR at this town.
TheEast Coast Road (ECR) fromChennai toKanyakumari connects this town as well. The major inter city bus routes from this town are toPattukkottai,Muthupet,Thanjavur,Mannargudi,Nagapattinam,Vedaranyam,Kumbakonam,Peravurani andPudukkottai. Long-distance buses are also operating from Adirampattinam toChennai,Tiruchirapalli,Puducherry,Karaikal,Rameshwaram,Thiruchendur,Nagercoil,Thiruvananthapuram etc.
