Gob an Choire orGob a' Choire (English name:Achill Sound), formerly anglicised asGubacurra, is aGaeltacht village inCounty Mayo, Ireland. It had a population of 265 at the2022 census.[1]
The village of Achill Sound lies on the east coast ofAchill Island and is the first settlement one reaches after crossing theMichael Davitt Bridge, which is aswing bridge that joins Achill Island to Corraun Peninsula on the mainland.
In ancient times the southern entrance was guarded byCarrickkildavnet Castle.
Achill Sound is also the name of the waterway separating Achill Island from the Irish mainland.
The localnational (primary) school is Achill Sound National School.[2] As of 2025, the school had an enrollment of 14 pupils.[3]
Achill Sound is located on theR319 regional road.
Bus Éireann route 450 (Dooagh-Westport-Louisburgh) operates several times a day in each direction, less often on Sundays.[4]
