TheWujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire is a local government area inFar North Queensland, Australia.[3] It is managed as aDeed of Grant in Trust under theLocal Government (Community Government Areas) Act 2004.

In the2021 census, the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire had a population of 276 people.[1]

Geography

It is on the east coast of theCape York Peninsula excised from theShire of Douglas and consists of a single locality,Wujal Wujal which is split into two disjoint areas separated by theBloomfield River (the river itself remaining part of Shire of Douglas).[4]

History

Kuku Yalanji (also known asGugu Yalanji,Kuku Yalaja, andKuku Yelandji) is anAustralian Aboriginal language of theMossman andDaintree areas ofNorth Queensland. The language region includes areas within the local government area ofShire of Douglas andShire of Cook, particularly the localities of Mossman, Daintree,Bloomfield River, China Camp,Maytown,Palmer,Cape Tribulation andWujal Wujal.[5]

Yalanji (also known asKuku Yalanji,Kuku Yalaja,Kuku Yelandji, andGugu Yalanji) is an Australian Aboriginal language ofFar North Queensland. The traditional language region isMossman River in the south to theAnnan River in the north, bordered by thePacific Ocean in the east and extending inland to west ofMount Mulgrave. This includes the local government boundaries of theShire of Douglas, theShire of Cook and the Aboriginal Shire of Wujal Wujal and the towns and localities ofCooktown,Mossman,Daintree,Cape Tribulation andWujal Wujal. It includes the head of thePalmer River, theBloomfield River,China Camp,Maytown, andPalmerville.[6]

In the2006 census, the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire had a population of 326 people.[7]

In the2011 census, the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire had a population of 270 people.[8]

In the2016 census, the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire had a population of 282 people.[9]

In the2021 census, the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire had a population of 276 people.[1]
