Abdullah Ropri[1] orAbdullah Muhaddis Ropri orHafiz Abdullah Ropri,[2][3][4] (Punjabi:عبد اللہ روپڑی; Abdullah Ropri, 1895AD – 20 August 1964AD, 1303AH – 11Rabiʽ al-Thani 1384AH) was an Islamic scholar, historian,mufti,commentator andmuhaddith ofIndian Subcontinent.[5][6][7]

He was a scholar of Hadith.[5] Ropri was anIndian freedom fighter but after the creation ofMuslim League, he became an activist ofTehreek-e-Pakistan, also known asPakistan movement.[6] He was one of the notable leaders ofAhl-i Hadees.[8] He was one of the founders ofJamiat Ahle Hadith.[9]

Early life and education

Abdullah Ropari was born in 1895 in a town ofAmritsar district ofBritish India.[10][11] His father name was Miyan Roshan Deen.[11][7] His ancestors were originally from Aminpur village inGujranwala District. During the reign of Maharaja of Punjab,Ranjit Singh, some members of his family got lands inAmritsar district ofBritish India and moved there.[7] Abdullah was born here. Abdullah Ropari received his religious education from Molvi Abdullah, who was famous Islamic scholar of the town,[11][12] inChunian city where he memorisedQuran.[10][11] He went toMeerut andDelhi for further religious education.[11][10] He received his hadith degree fromAbdul Mannan Wazirabadi.[7]

In 1915, after completing the education, Ropari moved toAmbala,Haryana, and stayed there till 1937. Ropari open a religious school (Madrasa), Darul Hadees and started career as teacher.[13]

After partition

In 1947, Abdullah Ropari moved toLahore fromAmritsar after thepartition of India,[14] where he opened a religious school named, Madarsa Ahle hadees and a mosque named, Jama al-Quds Ahle hadees.[14]

Death

Abdullah Ropari died on 20 August 1964AD, 11Rabiʽ al-Thani 1384AH inLahore,Pakistan.[15][16][7] His funeral prayers were led by Muhammad Gondalwi and he was buried in the cemetery ofGarden Town, Lahore.[16][17][18]
