Abdul Karim Amrullah (born asMuhammad Rasul; 10 February 1879 – 2 June 1945), known asHaji Rasul, was aMuslim reformer who led reformation ofIslam inSumatra,Dutch East Indies (nowIndonesia).

Haji Rasul was born in Sungai Batang,Maninjau,West Sumatra on February 10, 1879. His father was Muslimulema, SyekhMuhammad Amrullah Tuanku Kisai and his mother Andung Tarawas.[citation needed] In 1894, he went toMecca, studying Islamic law underShaikh Ahmad Khatib. After he graduated, he taught Islam in Mecca until 1906.[1] Upon his return to theDutch East Indies (nowIndonesia), he founded an Islamic organization known asMuhammadiyah in West Sumatra. In 1915, Haji Rasul foundedSumatera Thawalib inPadang Panjang. Thawalib was an Islamic school that produced many progressive students.[citation needed] He died inJakarta before independence day on June 2, 1945.
Haji Rasul's sonHamka was also a prominentulama, politician, and author. Rusdi Hamka, his grandson, is a politician, a member of DPR fromUnited Development Party. His grandchild, Sutan Amrull, is a noted makeup artist and drag performer in the United States, known by the stage nameRaja Gemini who won thethird season ofRuPaul's Drag Race and returned to compete on the winners-onlyseventh season ofRuPaul's Drag Race All Stars.
