Aba al-WaqfArabic:أبا الوقفAbā al Waqf) is a village in the markaz ofMaghagha inMinya Governorate,Egypt. It is about 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Maghagha, and 2 miles (3.2 km) west of theNile.[2]

Etymology

The name of the village comes fromEgyptian jp.t "harem" (Ancient Greek:Ὠφις). TheCoptic and theGreek name ofLuxor (Coptic:ⲡⲁⲡⲉ,Ancient Greek:Ἀπις, Ὠφιεῖον) also share the same etymology.[3]

History

In the late 1800s, Aba al-Waqf was the site of one of the largestsugar mills in the world.[4] The mill, which belonged to theKhedive,[4] was constructed beginning in 1872 on the banks of theIbrahimiya Canal.[2]

The1885 Census of Egypt recorded Aba al-Waqf (asAba-el-Wakf) in the district ofBeni Mazar inMinya Governorate; at that time, the population of the city was 4,546 (2,293 men and 2,253 women).[5]
