Aaron Murray Gate (born 26 November 1990)[1] is a New Zealandroad andtrack cyclist,[5] who currently rides forUCI WorldTeamXDS Astana Team.[6][7] He represented his country in track cycling at the2012,2016 and2020 Summer Olympics. Gate is the first New Zealand athlete to win four gold medals at a singleCommonwealth Games.[8]

Career

He won a bronze medal at the2012 Summer Olympics in theteam pursuit event with teammatesSam Bewley,Marc Ryan,Jesse Sergent andWestley Gough.[9] On 24 February 2013 inBelarus, Gate won the world championship title in theomnium event. AlongsidePieter Bulling,Regan Gough, andDylan Kennett, he came fourth in themen's team pursuit at the2016 Rio Olympics, being beaten byDenmark to the bronze medal.[10] He was named in the startlist for the2017 Vuelta a España.[11] In 2021 he won his first national title winning theNew Zealand National Time Trial Championships by 0.7 seconds ahead ofGeorge Bennett.[12]

At the2020 Summer Olympics, Gate competed in theteam pursuit event with teammatesRegan Gough,Jordan Kerby andCampbell Stewart. In the bronze medal race against Australia, he crashed after clipping Kerby's rear wheel, fracturing hiscollarbone. He subsequently withdrew from the rest of the Games, and was replaced by Stewart in the madison and omnium events.[13]

In 2022, at the age of 31, Gate became a quadruple Commonwealth champion when taking gold in theindividual pursuit,team pursuit andpoints race on the track as well as the road race at the2022 Commonwealth Games inBirmingham.[14][15][16][17][18]
