A Lost Cause: Flight of King James II after the Battle of the Boyne is an 1888history painting by the EnglishartistAndrew Carrick Gow.[1][2] It depicts a scene from 1690 during theWilliamite War in Ireland whenJames II sailed forFrance from the port ofKinsale following hisIrish Army's defeat at theBattle of the Boyne in 1690. After his departure hisJacobite supporters continued to fight on – notably at theBattle of Aughrim – beforesurrendering at Limerick in 1691.
It was displayed at theRoyal Academy'sSummer Exhibition of 1888.[3]Today it is in the collection of theTate Britain inLondon, having been acquired in 1894.[4]
