PDBsumstructure summary

Apolipoprotein C-II (Apo-CII, or Apoc-II), orapolipoprotein C2 is aprotein that in humans is encoded by theAPOC2gene.

The protein encoded by this gene is secreted in plasma, where it is a component ofvery low density lipoproteins andchylomicrons. This protein activates the enzymelipoprotein lipase in capillaries,[5] which hydrolyzes triglycerides and thus provides freefatty acids andglycerols for cells. Mutations in this gene causehyperlipoproteinemia type IB, characterized byxanthomas, pancreatitis, andhepatosplenomegaly, but no increased risk foratherosclerosis. Lab tests will show elevated blood levels of triglycerides, cholesterol, and chylomicrons[6]
