TheAAA Reina de Reinas Championship (literally "AAA Queen of Queens Championship", "AAA Women's Championship") is asingleswomen's professional wrestlingchampionship promoted byAmericanpromotionWWE through itsMexicanLucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA) subsidiary. It is the only women's championship in AAA.

From its creation in 1999 to 2009, the title was put on the line every year during the eponymous "Reina de Reinas" tournament, in addition to traditional defenses. The tournament eventually returned in 2012, withSexy Star becoming the first wrestler to successfully retain the title at the event.[3][4][5][6]

The inaugural champion wasXóchitl Hamada, who was crowned after winning the original Reina de Reinas tournament in 1999.[2]Faby Apache andTaya hold the record for most reigns with four, while they along withTiffany and Sexy Star have the record for most Reina de Reinas tournaments won, with three. The record for longest reign is held by Taya, whose first reign lasted 945 days, with the record for shortest held byAyako Hamada (Xóchitl's sister) at 33 days. Although the title is supposedly for women only,Pimpinela Escarlata, aluchadorExótico, won it in 2011.

Out of WWE's currently active championships, the Reina de Reinas Championship is one of the two that did not originate in the promotion. It is the fourth-oldest and longest-tenured active championship in the company, behind theWWE (2016),United States (2024), andIntercontinental Championships (2025), as WWE has only owned the Reina de Reinas Championship since 2025.

Title history

[edit]

On February 19, 1999,Xóchitl Hamada became the inaugural champion after defeatingEsther Moreno,Miss Janeth andRossy Moreno in afour-way match.[2] On February 20, 2000, the championship wasvacated after the previous titleholderEsther Moreno suffered an injury. Rossy Moreno won the vacant championship on the same date by defeating Hamada, Janeth andMartha Villalobos in a four-way match.[7][8] On July 31, 2011, atVerano de Escándalo,Pimpinela Escarlata became the first man to hold the title in the championship's history, which was legitimized as Escarlata being aExótico.[9] On February 19, 2013, the championship was vacated as the previous championSexy Star vacated the tile due to her pregnancy.[10] On March 17, atRey de Reyes,Faby Apache won the vacant title by defeatingLuFisto,Mari Apache andTaya in afour-way elimination match.[11]

On July 1, 2017, the director of talentVampiro stripped Taya from the title, who was in her second reign. Inkayfabe, Vampiro explained due to Taya using an illegal chokehold onAyako Hamada, which Taya defeated to win the title on April 21, the championship was vacated, despite the match being ano disqualification match.[12] However, the real reason for the vacancy is still in question, as it was reported that AAA requested from Taya's fiancéJohnny Mundo to turn the title for photoshoot, which was later declared vacated.[13] This led to Taya publicly quitting the company.[14] On July 16, Star won the vacant title after defeatingBig Mami, Faby Apache,Goya Kong,La Hiedra andLady Shani in asix-way match.[15]

On August 26, atTriplemanía XXV, Star successfully defended her title against Hamada,Rosemary and Shani in a four-way. During the match, Star legitimately injured Rosemary after applying an armbar. On September 4, due to violation of the promotion's rules, Star's victory in the championship match was overturned as a result of the incident, leading to the title being vacated.[16] On October 1, atHéroes Inmortales XI,Shani defeated Hamada to win the vacant championship.[17] On August 3, 2019, the title was vacated once again after the last championKeyra suffered an injury.[citation needed] On August 3, atTriplemanía XXVII,Tessa Blanchard won the vacant championship after winning a seven-womanTables, ladders, and chairs match.[18]

On September 15, 2019, Taya Valkyrie, previously known simply as Taya who made her return to the company on 2018,[citation needed], defeated Blanchard to win the title for the third time, during theLucha Invades NY event.[19] On February 24, 2021, the title was vacated for the fifth time after Valkyrie signed withWWE.[citation needed] On May 1, atRey de Reyes, Faby Apache won the vacated championship.[20] On December 4, atTriplemanía Regia II, Valkyrie made her return to the company.[21] On April 23, 2022, atImpact Wrestling'sRebellion, Valkyrie defeatedDeonna Purrazzo to win the title for the fourth time in her career.[22]
