TheA8 is a major road inScotland, connectingEdinburgh toGreenock viaGlasgow. Its importance diminished following the construction of theM8 motorway which also covers the route between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The A8 begins at the West End of Edinburgh, in theNew Town. The road originally also includedPrinces Street, but this stretch was declassified, as Princes Street is no longer open to all traffic.
The road continues westwards into the suburbs of the city passingMurrayfield andCorstorphine, often with an accompanying bus lane. Only once the road reaches theA720 City Bypass does it become aprimary route, leading out past theRoyal Highland Showground atIngliston, andEdinburgh Airport.
AtNewbridge, the A8 meets the start of the M8 andM9 motorways. From here the A8 is interrupted; it has been renumberedA89 untilBathgate,A7066 toWhitburn and thenB7066 Harthill, until it resumes atNewhouse.
From Newhouse it runs parallel to the M8. Until recently there was no road of motorway standard between Newhouse andBaillieston in the eastern suburbs of Glasgow, and the A8 still carried all through traffic here, having been progressively upgraded to meet demand.[1] However it was finally replaced in 2017 by the last section of the M8.[2] It is now the principal non-motorway access between theEurocentral business park and the settlements ofChapelhall andCalderbank, south ofAirdrie.
Just prior to Junction 8 of the M8 it diverges from the motorway, and meets theA89 atBargeddie while co-existing as the interchange for the M8 andM73. At a roundabout nearSwinton it briefly merges with the A89 and heads towards central Glasgow. The A8 now passes through suburbanGarrowhill,Barlanark,Wellhouse,Springboig,Cranhill andCarntyne as Edinburgh Road – much of which is a two/three-lane dual-carriageway, but an urban 30 mph (48 km/h) restriction is still applied – then pastHaghill andDennistoun as Alexandra Parade into the city centre atGlasgow Royal Infirmary andGlasgow Cathedral, where it follows theHigh Street and then theSaltmarket running north–south – meeting the A89 (Gallowgate) and theA749 (London Road) atGlasgow Cross. It splits for the complex one-way system, recombining prior to the junction at the start of theA814 that heads west along theClyde, before crossing the river nearThe Gorbals, where it meets the end of theA74.
From there the A8 leads out of town throughTradeston,Kingston (passing under the M8'sKingston Bridge)Kinning Park,Cessnock andIbrox as Paisley Road West, changing to Edmiston Drive pastIbrox Stadium, then throughDrumoyne andShieldhall as Shieldhall Road,Braehead as Renfrew Road and the town centre ofRenfrew as Glasgow Road, Glebe Street and Inchinnan Road, passing to the rear ofGlasgow Airport atInchinnan, crossing over the M8 east ofBishopton and meeting it again at the motorway's western end, Junction 31 between Bishopton andLangbank.
The A8 becomes the primary route again and takes traffic throughPort Glasgow. Its terminus is in Greenock at a largeroundabout with theA78 road and the A770 toGourock, which was the former terminus of the A8.

TheA8(M) is a motorway inGlasgow, Scotland.
It was opened in 2016 after theScottish Government proposed that the Baillieston Roundabout should be themotorway standard and that the A8 was not up to motorway standards.
Work on its construction started in early 2015 to upgrade the road. It is the shortest motorway in the United Kingdom. There is no signage of the A8(M) but signposted as theA8 link from theM73 andM8.[3]
It does however retain its motorway status.
Three short stretches of the A8 are part of three differentEuroroutes, as follows:
