Aégis is the thirdstudio album byNorwegiangothic metal bandTheatre of Tragedy, and the last album of their musical period defined bygothic stylings andEarly Modern English lyrics.

Music and lyrics

[edit]

As with Theatre of Tragedy's previous albums, the lyrics are written inEarly Modern English (except "Venus", inLatin) which sounds very different from modern English:Vaunt! - Devil tyne - Wadst thou wane fore'ermae? (from the song "Angélique"). The subject matter is drawn from a range ofEuropean folklore and history:Venus andPoppæa are from Roman sources;Aœde,Cassandra,Bacchante andSiren are drawn fromGreek mythology; whileLorelei refers to aNix from German stories, andAngélique is inspired by medieval poemOrlando Furioso.
