Main-belt asteroid
98 Ianthe is a largemain-belt asteroid , named forthree figures inGreek mythology . It is very dark and is composed ofcarbonates . It was one of the numerous (for his time—the 19th century) discoveries byC. H. F. Peters , who found it on April 18, 1868, fromClinton ,New York .
This body is orbiting theSun with aperiod of 4.41 years and aneccentricity of 0.186. Theorbital plane isinclined at an angle of 15.6° to theplane of the ecliptic . Measurements of the cross-section dimension yield a size of around 105 km.Photometric observations of this asteroid during 2007 at the Organ Mesa Observatory inLas Cruces, New Mexico were used to create alight curve plot. This showed asynodic rotation period of 16.479± 0.001 hours and a brightness variation of 0.27± 0.02magnitude during each cycle.[ 5] It is classified as aC-type asteroid , indicating a dark, carbonaceous surface.
The detection of a candidate moon orbiting 98 Ianthe was announced in 2004.[ 7]
