7517 Alisondoane (prov. designation:1989 AD) is a darkbackground asteroid from the inner regions of theasteroid belt. It was discovered on 3 January 1989, by Japanese amateur astronomerTakuo Kojima at theYGCO Chiyoda Station in the northern Kantō region of Japan. The carbonaceousC-type asteroid has arotation period of 9.7 hours and measures approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) in diameter. It was named after Alison Doane (1958–2017), curator of astronomical photographs at theHarvard College Observatory.[1]

Orbit and classification

[edit]

Alisondoane is a non-family asteroid of the main belt'sbackground population when applying thehierarchical clustering method to itsproper orbital elements.[5][6][7] It orbits the Sun in theinner main-belt at a distance of 1.8–3.1 AU once every 3 years and 10 months (1,397 days). Its orbit has aneccentricity of 0.26 and aninclination of 6° with respect to theecliptic.[3]

Naming

[edit]

Thisminor planet was named in honor of Alison Doane (1958–2017), curator of astronomical photographs at theHarvard College Observatory. She was also principal oboe with theBoston Philharmonic Orchestra from 1982 to 2001.[1] Theofficial naming citation was published by theMinor Planet Center on 25 December 2015 (M.P.C. 97567).[17]

Physical characteristics

[edit]

Alisondoane has been characterized as a carbonaceousC-type asteroid byPanSTARRS photometric survey,[15] as well as by theSloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).[16]

Lightcurves

[edit]

A rotationallightcurve analysis by Czech astronomerPetr Pravec in 2007 rendered arotation period of9.701±0.001 hours with a high brightness amplitude of 1.13 inmagnitude (U=3).[a] A modeled lightcurves usingphotometric data from various sources, gave a sidereal period of9.70943 hours and twospin axes of (123.0°, −51.0°) and (314.0°, −60.0°) inecliptic coordinates (λ, β).[14]

Diameter and albedo

[edit]

According to the surveys carried out by the JapaneseAkari satellite and NASA'sWide-field Infrared Survey Explorer with its subsequentNEOWISE mission,Alisondoane measures between 8.52 and 9.99 kilometers in diameter and its surface has analbedo between 0.04 and 0.122.[8][9][10][11][12][13] TheCollaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link (CALL) calculates a smaller diameter of 5.16 kilometers based on an assumed albedo of 0.18 for anX-type asteroid.[4][b]

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^abPravec (2007): rotation period9.701±0.001 hours with a brightness amplitude of1.13 mag. CALL assigns a "Quality Code" of 3, which denotes a secure result within the precision given and no ambiguity. Summary figures for (7517) Alisondoane atCollaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link (CALL)
  2. ^Summary Notes by the LCDB: "The Masi et al. paper gave this as a C-type on the basis of a neutral spectrum. However, given its location in the inner main belt, we adopted class X and a Pv = 0.18"
