The72nd British Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as theBAFTAs, were held on 10 February 2019 at theRoyal Albert Hall inLondon, honouring the best national and foreign films of2018. Presented by theBritish Academy of Film and Television Arts, accolades were handed out for the best feature-length film and documentaries of any nationality that were screened at British cinemas in 2018.

The nominees were announced on 9 January 2019 by actorWill Poulter and actressHayley Squires.[1] The period comedy-dramaThe Favourite received the most nominations: twelve across eleven categories.[2]

English actressJoanna Lumley hosted the ceremony for the second consecutive year.[3]

The nominees were announced on 9 January 2019.[4] The winners were announced on 10 February 2019.[5][6]

On 6 February 2019, BAFTA announced they had suspendedBryan Singer's name fromBohemian Rhapsody's nomination forOutstanding British Film followingaccusations against Singer concerningsexual abuse.[7][8]

Ceremony information

The ceremony took place at theRoyal Albert Hall and was hosted by English actressJoanna Lumley for the second consecutive year.[3] In a reference to the controversy surroundingKevin Hart's removal as host of the91st Academy Awards, Lumley said that she suspects she probably would not have been hosting the ceremony if she were onTwitter.[11] It opened with a performance fromCirque du Soleil for the third consecutive year and was broadcast after a short delay onBBC One.[3][12]

The period comedy-dramaThe Favourite received the most nominations with twelve and won seven, includingOutstanding British Film,Best Actress in a Leading Role forOlivia Colman, andBest Actress in a Supporting Role forRachel Weisz.[5][13]Roma won four awards, includingBest Film andBest Director forAlfonso Cuarón.[5]Rami Malek wonBest Actor in a Leading Role forBohemian Rhapsody, thankingFreddie Mercury in his acceptance speech.[5][14]

TheIn Memoriam section paid tribute to those who had died during the previous year, includingAlbert Finney,William Goldman,Penny Marshall,Burt Reynolds andNicolas Roeg. The segment was accompanied by saxophonist Jess Gillam, who performed "(Where Do I Begin?) Love Story", the title song from the filmLove Story, as composed byFrancis Lai, who also was featured in the tribute.[15]Thelma Schoonmaker won theBAFTA Fellowship, presented byCate Blanchett andPrince William. She joined the fellowship along with her late husbandMichael Powell and long-term collaboratorMartin Scorsese.[9]Elizabeth Karlsen andStephen Woolley won theBAFTA Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award for their contributions toNumber 9 Films.[10]
